In 1992, the UN General Assembly, welcoming the fact that certain Non Governmental Organizations on the initiative of one of them (the French based International Movement A-T.D. fourth World) had in many states observed 17th October every year as a world day for overcoming Extreme Poverty, Declared that date as the International day for the Eradication of Poverty under (resolution 47/196 of December). The observance aims to promote awareness of the need to eradicate poverty and destitution in all countries particularly in developing countries a need that has become a development priority.

In this forward GLOPEC has also marked this day as the General Assembly for GLOPEC which will pronounce poverty Eradication activities for the coming centuries.

Series of activities are being planed for the celebration of this day in the form of seminars in schools, the general Assembly meeting , CSO think-thank meetings, community women and girls meeting, honoring of awards and finally lunching the coming Annual and strategic (8) Eight-year Health Project which is aimed at improving results before 2015.

Targeted Areas are:

  • Malarial

  • Tuberculosis

  • Maternal and Child Health

  • HIV/AIDS.

There is the need to make the world know that this is not a far away country issue and that poor African Countries stand the chance to loose a lot of poverty is not carefully eradicated.

It is important for us all to understand that 75% of these related diseases and death occur between the most economically active segment of a countries population of which Ghana is a major Target.
